Saffron and I rushed around the weekend before Zowy started her first day of school. I bought her and Zach their school supplies, while Saffron dressed them in the best clothes possible.

The years seemed to have flown by and soon Saffron and I were hitting middle adulthood. We had no clue that a night of celebration could turn almost deathly in seconds.

Everything went crazy so fast, I’m still not sure what happened that night. One minute we are in the middle of the Happy Birthday chorus to Saffy and the next everyone is screaming and smoke filled the room.

Luckily, we had enough of my fellow firefighters there to help put out the flames. When the smoke settled, I made sure all the children were accounted for.  Saffy was badly burned in the flames and had to be rushed to the ER.
She was forced to stay in the burn unit for several months, which left me to tend to the kids, alone. I visited her every night, and watched her heal.

When Saffron finally got to come home, we started trying for that last baby again.

The risk of another fire didn’t worry us as Zach’s 13th birthday drew closer. We couldn’t take away his opportunity for a party just because we worried about him. He aged into a very handsome teenager. Compared to my pictures at 13, we could have passed as twins. I definitely couldn’t deny him as my son.

Finally, after years of trying, Saffron finally became pregnant with our last child.

It only took one year in high school before Zach was bringing home a girlfriend. Emerson was a beauty, but her family was dirt poor and her cloths showed it. Zach begged his mom to help fix her.

Saffron refused to see a doctor, she thought she knew everything about being pregnant and wanted to have the child natural without the help from doctors. As she grew bigger and bigger I begged her to go. I thought for sure something was wrong with her.

It didn’t take long before we found out why she had been so huge.

Find out next time what happened to make Saffron’s pregnancy be different from her prior pregnancies.
